Busan Bridge, a symbolic bridge of Busan
There are a total of 7 coastal bridges in Busan that connect land and sea. Busan Bridge, built as a symbol of the development of Busan Port, broke its ground in 1976 and was completed in 1980. Before the bridge's opening, the current Yeongdo Bridge was called Busan Bridge. It has been connecting Jung-gu and Yeongdo-gu in Busan ever since its completion.
Busan Bridge has replaced the current Yeongdo Bridge, which was built under Japanese rule, as a representative structure of Busan. Its name comes from the fact that it represents Busan as the longest arch bridge in Korea. This gorgeous bridge celebrated the 100th anniversary of the opening of Busan Port and symbolizes Korea's industrial development.
Busan Bridge functions as an industrial road and a port road that easily handles the traffic volume of the Yeongdo district, a shipbuilding industrial complex, and a new port. Large trucks weighing 54 tons that cannot pass through the Yeongdo Bridge can pass Busan Bridge. The bridge also connects to Busan's urban expressway and thus directly links Busan Port and Gyeongbu Expressway.
Busan Bridge was designed and constructed by Korean engineers and is considered a turning point in developing domestic architectural engineering and construction technologies. Its size and complex structure make it meaningful that Korean engineers completed it with Korean materials.
The size is truly impressive. It is 260m long and 20m wide and has four-lane roadways and sidewalks 2m wide on each side.
Steel arches made of the tide arch method, a design method that connects the bridges at both ends of the arch with horizontal tension members, rise to a height of 31m, becoming a symbol of Busan. The original color of the bridge was orange, but it is now gray and white, reflecting modern beauty. Its new hues harmonize with the surrounding area, stabilizing the vibrant harbor nearby and downtown atmosphere.
Please take a closer look at the Busan Bridge, which shows the true nature of the port city of Busan and its value as a magnificent bridge.
